The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
