An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Changing Odds in Predictions
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
Yet the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule presented on recently aims to prohibit public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
